From your closed guard, an effective way of enter the armbar is to secure a cross collar grip and a cross sleeve grip. Place a foot on his hip to block his elbow and push him into an angle with your other leg. Pay attention to when he resist by posturing, pulling his elbow back, stepping over your head, or pushing your legs back over you. You can also do a fast version of this armbar by locking your legs over his shoulder before passing the leg over his head.
